This PSSC film utilizes a fascinating set consisting of a rotating table and furniture occupying surprisingly unpredictable spots within the viewing area. The fine cinematography by Abraham Morochnik, and funny narration by University of Toronto professors Donald Ivey and Patterson Hume is a wonderful example of the fun a creative team of filmmakers can have with a subject that other, less imaginative types might find pedestrian.

With a population of just over two million, Mashhad is Iran's second-largest city. It is located in the Kashaf River valley near the northeast corner of the country, not far away from the borders of Turkmenistan and Afganistan. Besides being the capital and center of commerce for Khorasan province, Mashhad is tourist center as well as a site of pilgrimage for millions to the shrine of martyred Shi'ate Imam Reza. The crew of STS-107 acquired this snow-enhanced image just after noon (local time)...

This one-meter resolution satellite image of Bam, Iran was taken by www.spaceimaging.com/ Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite on Dec. 27, 2003, just one day after a catastrophic earthquake struck the historic city. The image shows widespread destruction as a result of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that leveled 70 percent of the buildings according to news reports. Clearly seen in this image is the 2,000-year-old citadel, considered the world's largest mud fortress. According to news reports, much...

This microscopic imager mosaic of the target area called "Diamond Jenness" was taken after NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity ground into the surface with its rock abrasion tool for a second time. Opportunity has bored nearly a dozen holes into the inner walls of "Endurance Crater." On sols 177 and 178 (July 23 and July 24, 2004), the rover worked double-duty on Diamond Jenness. Surface debris and the bumpy shape of the rock resulted in a shallow and irregular hole,...

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit collected data on morphology, composition, and mineralogy of a rock nicknamed " Tetl"using the microscopic imager, the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, and the Moessbauer spectrometer before moving on. Scientists are discussing a suggestion that this rock outcrop and others on the " West Spur"of the " Columbia Hills"in Gusev Crater on Mars may contain evidence of graded bedding, in which alternate layers of sediment are either...

These photos belong to beautifulrecorders.com , a series of CC-licensed, professional photographs of top quality handcrafted recorders freely available to everyone. The author of the photographs is Oscar Romero . The recorder is a popular instrument today, but today’s vision of it is pretty unfair since it's mainly known as a cheap, bad-sounding, school instrument. Indeed, this (recent) vision is more widely spread today than its historical role and background, which is also quite alive...
